Clinical and laboratory aspects of common variable immunodeficiency Anais da ABC (AABC)
Kokron,Cristina M.; Errante,Paolo R.; Barros,Myrthes T.; Baracho,Gisele V.; Camargo,Maristela M.; Kalil,Jorge; Rizzo,Luiz V..
Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is an immunological disorder characterized by defective antibody production, recurrent infections, most notably of the respiratory tract, autoimmune phenomena and cancer. Some CVID patients may also present disturbances of the cellular immune response such as a decrease in the number and proportion of different lymphocyte populations, diminished lymphoproliferative response to mitogens and antigens, altered production of cytokines, and deficient expression of cell-surface molecules. Most Brazilian CVID patients included in this study show a decrease in T and B lymphocyte counts in the peripheral blood. Furthermore, their lymphocytes are more susceptible to apoptosis following activation than normal individuals, and...

Clinical and laboratory characteristics of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome in Chinese patients BJID
Weng,Yali; Chen,Nian; Han,Yaping; Xing,Yiping; Li,Jun.
Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) associated with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is an emerging infectious disease. 12 patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome in our study were presented mainly with fever and severe malaise. The clinical manifestations typically became worse on the 6th or 7th day. The average fever time is 9.11 ± 1.54 days. Most of them had multiorgan dysfunction, and part of them had hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis histiocytosis (HLH). The characteristic laboratory findings in the early stage were the drop of white blood cells (WBC), platelets (PLT) and serum Ca++, while increase of aspartate amino transferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)....

Cyclic pamidronate treatment for osteogenesis imperfecta: Report from a Brazilian reference center Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pinheiro,Bruna; Zambrano,Marina B.; Vanz,Ana Paula; Brizola,Evelise; Souza,Liliane Todeschini de; Félix,Têmis Maria.
Abstract Treatment of moderate and severe forms of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) with cyclic pamidronate at the Reference Center for OI Treatment in Southern Brazil was studied. A retrospective cohort study was conducted from 2002 to 2012. Data were obtained during inpatient (drug infusion) and outpatient care. Clinical data, including the presence of blue sclerae, dentinogenesis imperfecta, history and site of the fractures, biochemical data, including calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase levels, were systematically collected. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Forty-five patients (26 females) were included in the study, and the age of the patients at the time of diagnosis ranged from 1 to 144...

Is community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) an emerging pathogen among children in Brazil? BJID
Paternina-de la Ossa,Rolando; Prado,Seila Israel do; Cervi,Maria Célia; Lima,Denissani Aparecida Ferrari dos Santos; Martinez,Roberto; Bellissimo-Rodrigues,Fernando.
ABSTRACT Background: Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is spreading worldwide, but little is known about the epidemiology of this pathogen in Brazil. Objective: To evaluate clinical and microbiological features of children with S. aureus infections admitted to a university hospital. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study evaluating the potential risk factors for CA-MRSA, and a retrospective cohort evaluating in-hospital clinical outcomes. To include patients with both community and hospital-associated infections, we screened the results of the microbiological laboratory tests from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2016. According to the phenotype, we classified the isolates in Methicillin-Susceptible S. aureus...

Pre-hospital treatment of snake envenomation in patients presented AT a tertiary care hospital in Northwestern India J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Chauhan,S.; Faruqi,S.; Bhalla,A.; Sharma,N.; Varma,S.; Bali,J..
Snakebite is an important medical emergency. Anti-snake venom along with supportive care is the only specific treatment. However, many people put their faith in non-registered medical practitioners. Where medical aid is available, lack of trained health personnel jeopardizes the situation. This retrospective study, the first of its kind, was aimed at studying the pre-hospital treatment as well as the behavior of patients bitten by snakes and referred to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. A total of 88 cases that occurred between January 1997 and December 2001 were studied. Seventy patients received treatment prior to admission (the majority was treated by non-registered medical practitioners, registered medical...

Snakebites in Turkey: epidemiological and clinical aspects between the years 1995 and 2004 J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Cesaretli,Y; Ozkan,O.
The venom of poisonous snakes comprises a complex mixture of several proteins with other less significant constituents, resulting in principles capable of changing viable tissues. The hemotoxic factor is the main responsible for necrosis and tissue sloughing. Envenomations are common in rural areas of Turkey caused by snake species that present hepatotoxic venom, which causes local swelling, ecchymosis and alterations in blood profile. The epidemiological and clinical findings of snake envenomations in Turkey were evaluated based on data recorded by the National Poison Information Center (NPIC) between 1995 and 2004, in a total of 550 snakebite cases. The month of peak incidence was June (24.3%) while most incidents occurred in Marmara, Central Anatolia...
